Project Summary

Stritzinger GmbH Role

  • Project Partner (SME solution provider)
  • Technology Provider: Erlang and Elixir code for a distributed Traffic-Engineering PCE
  • Code contribution: PCEP and Free Range Routing integration in TeraFlowSDN

Secured autonomic traffic management for a Tera of SDN flows

TeraFlow was a Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Action that built an open source, cloud-native SDN controller for transport networks beyond 5G. The platform combines network-function virtualisation, edge-computing hooks and automated security functions to steer traffic across multiple domains. The project closed in June 2023 with the public release of TeraFlowSDN 1.0 on GitLab. Peer Stritzinger GmbH brings proven Erlang and Elixir expertise, providing the fault-tolerant code base needed for distributed traffic engineering. We implemented the Path-Computation Element that speaks PCEP to Free-Range Routing, letting operators compute and install routes on demand. These contributions help TeraFlowSDN handle large networks and make it a practical choice for carriers planning 5G edge deployments.

Project Consortium

Fourteen partners span every layer of the telecom stack: operators Telefónica Innovación Digital and Telenor; vendors Infinera, SIAE Microelettronica and NEC Laboratories Europe; IT integrator Atos; research institutes and universities CTTC, Chalmers, UPM and NTNU; and SMEs Volta Networks (ADVA), UBITECH, Peer Stritzinger GmbH and Old Dog Consulting. Together they design and validate the open source TeraFlowSDN controller for multi-domain 5G and future 6G transport.

Volta Networks became part of ADVA (Adtran Networks) in 2021. Infinera became part of Nokia's Optical Networks business in February 2025.
